Is the plastic crisis going to affect business’ that sell plastic containers?

The plastic crisis is certainly a conundrum. The planet, especially our oceans are paying a price for our overuse of the material, yet it seems to be essential to our busy lives. Could we really give it up and go back to basics? Even the most ardent environmentalists really struggle when trying to go plastic free so would the average person really give up on the convenience that plastic provides? Should businesses who sell plastic containers be worried or will plastic remain our go-to option?


Much of the plastic that is produced is actually recyclable. Where it isn’t it is often because the material has been created using a blend of polymers which makes it difficult to process or because food waste has contaminated the material. What if instead of jumping to the conclusion that plastic is the enemy and working towards a solution that cuts it out altogether, we just got better at creating plastics that were easily recycled? It relies a lot on the general public actually getting involved and recycling their rubbish but much of the population are claiming that this is an issue that they care about, perhaps many might embrace the idea. Businesses that marketed their plastic containers in this way could actually do really well for themselves.


We all know that many out there are struggling with finances, we hear every day about children living in poverty and more and more people using food banks. The truth about plastic is that it is cheap and that, unfortunately, is what many people need. Many would be forced to choose groceries in plastic food containers (view more), simply because it would be cheaper than food stored in other products. It is unlikely, therefore, that businesses selling plastic containers will struggle. They might lose some custom but there are always going to be those who will rely on them.


The convenience of plastic is inescapable for many people, especially in our busy modern world. Plastic, in the first instance, is lightweight, which makes it easy to transport groceries. There is just no other material that can compare and so moving away from plastic could leave shoppers struggling to carry their groceries home. Secondly, plastic can be used in a number of different ways. Many of the plastics that are in our homes can be put into the freezer, the microwave and even the dishwasher, so they really tend to suit our modern way of life. Thirdly, plastic is extremely practical. It is strong and robust and so can be used over and over again. It is also safe in that it won’t smash unlike other materials such as glass if dropped.

Whilst there is no getting away from the fact that we are struggling with overuse of plastic, we are not likely to cut our usage in the near future because we are too reliant on it. Businesses selling plastic containers, therefore should not be too worried about the imminent future, therefore. They should, however, start to consider making plastics that can be easily recycled if they are to survive in the long term.
